about us

Studio Kohanå is a small-batch ceramic studio based in Vienna, where every piece is made entirely by hand. Founded by Hungarian ceramicist Bori Borbély, her work is rooted in a love for the material and the slow, mindful process of transforming raw clay into functional art. Each object is shaped, glazed, and fired with intention, resulting in pieces that are as beautiful as they are usable.

Bori spent four years formally studying ceramics and continues to evolve her practice through personal exploration, staying close to the materials and techniques that feel most honest to her. Her work is quiet and thoughtful, celebrating imperfections, honoring process, and inviting reflection through simplicity.

What Kohanå means

“Kohana means “little flower” in Japanese. I’ve always felt connected to flowers. To their softness, quiet strength, and natural beauty. It speaks to who I am and what I hope my work brings into the world. I’m also deeply inspired by Japanese culture and traditional ceramics, the simplicity, the respect for process, the appreciation for imperfection”

-Bori

Even the tiny circle above the “å” carries meaning: it resembles a calm figure seated in stillness, gently reflecting. A visual embodiment of everything Studio Kohanå stands for: presence, intention, and the quiet beauty of simple things. It's a tiny mark, but one that carries meaning. A reminder to slow down, breathe, and find peace in the everyday.

The goal is simple: to create ceramics that feel good to use. Pieces that are durable, thoughtfully designed, and fit seamlessly into everyday life. Each item has a unique character, thanks to the handcrafting process, offering something special in a world dominated by mass production.
